Flex Praises New Executive Order to Establish Portable Retirement Savings Accounts

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Flex Association today praised President Trump’s executive order directing the establishment of a new class of portable, tax-advantaged retirement savings accounts, accessible to all Americans, including millions of app-based, freelance, and independent workers. The accounts will travel with workers from job to job and platform to platform, untethered from any single employer or platform.

“Millions of Americans drive, deliver, design, and build - not for one employer, but for themselves and with the platforms that connect them to opportunity,” said Kristin Sharp, CEO of Flex. “This Executive Order is a recognition that the economy has changed, and our policies need to reflect the modern workforce. Portable retirement benefits tied to the worker, not to a particular company or platform, will help millions of Americans build toward the financial security they deserve. We are grateful to see the Administration take this important step forward." 

The American retirement system was designed for a workforce defined by long-term, single-employer careers. Last year, however, more than 72 million Americans participated in the app-based and freelance economy, many with limited or no access to traditional retirement benefits. Today’s executive order will provide new access to retirement savings accounts, empowering more workers to build long-term financial security.

The Flex Association has long championed portable benefits and independent contractor certainty as the cornerstones of equitable treatment for independent workers. We look forward to engaging in the rulemaking process as federal agencies consider these issues. Flex also urges Congress to pass legislation that enables and supports both benefits and flexibility.
